A Very Full First Day

Our first full day on Monday began with a 5:45AM wake-up for a 6AM workout in gym at Grande Sports World. We were hoping that the time difference would help us all to be ready at such an hour, but 6AM is still early no matter what time zone you are in. These workouts though were more for breathing and stretching than they were for any kind of several physical workout. The boys were focused from the outset, and we had a very productive 50 minutes that ended just in time for breakfast. We were also to catch our first glimpse of a gorgeous desert sunrise, though it was unclear if the players appreciated it as much as the coaches did!

We reconvened after breakfast for a classrooms session at 8:30 followed by a field session that featured a talk from Trilogy CEO and former Princeton, MLL, and Team USA standout Ryan Boyle. Preseason practices are always jammed packed as the team is simultaneously looking to shake the rust off while implementing the systems that we will need for the season.

Our fast tempo continued into our afternoon session that featured a significant amount of groundball and transition work. The boys battled hard as all were excited to finally get a chance to play another team. Our first game would be against Salpointe Catholic that evening who finished fourth in the state of Arizona last year.

After a quick turnaround from dinner, and an even quicker warmup, the boys took the field under the setting sun in Arizona for our first scrimmage. With the development of our offensive and defensive schemes still in the earliest of stages, the foci for us were to win all the little battles and pay attention to all of the little habits that we discuss daily. The boys worked hard and were able to put together a strong performance. All players made contributions in the effort.

The Bears will look to carry the strong momentum from day one into the next 6AM workout tomorrow during day two!
